Whether you’ve heard Bibi Bourelly’s songs piped from her own lungs, or channeled through Rihanna, her style is distinct, captivating and unmistakeable. There’s a soulfulness at the basis of her sound, but she isn’t afraid to push her vocals to a punk rock rawness when required to deliver an honest and blunt blow. It runs throughoutRihanna’s smash hit ‘B***h Better Have My Money’ and ANTI album track ‘Higher’, and it’s at the forefront of Bibi’s own tracks ‘Riot’ and ‘Ego’ to the rock-n-roll stylings of recent single ‘Sally’.
The 21-year-old Berlin native literally couldn’t be doing anything else. The daughter of a Jazz guitarist father and an artist mother, who was taken by cancer when Bibi was just six years old, she’s been channeling her emotions through melody even before she could talk. On completing school at the age of 16, she decided that she had no use for formal education and left for the US where she knew she could take her musical career further.
Since then, the now 21-year-old has done pretty well for herself, having collaborated with everyone from Lil Wayne, Usher and Selena Gomez, to the UK’s own Little Simzand Nick Brewer. She pretty much formed the basis for Rihanna’s rebellious ANTIalbum, setting the stage with ‘BBHMM’ which came about following a studio session with Kanye West. The connection was made by Grammy-nominated producerPaperboy Fabe, who she’d been talking to online, and on arrival in L.A he booked her in for a session with Kanye, in which she’d take 20 minutes to write ‘Higher’. Rihannawould later hear ‘BBHMM’ which was intended – like all of Bibi‘s writing – to be one of her own records, and a hit was born.
