It’s funny how one song can change things. Long Beach based, Compton bred rapper Boogie’s Thirst 48may have been one of the strongest projects of last year, but most people didn’t know it. They needed that big song to come through and grab their attention, but what he had given them was a well executed, cohesive, concept project that showed he could run with any of your favourite rappers. It was never a question of skill or artistry, he just needed the listeners.
This year he found that song, attracting more ears than ever before with ‘Oh My’. Taking on a post-‘Hot N***a’ Jahlil Beats production had first time listeners commenting that he might be ‘The next Bobby Shmurda’ – totally oblivious of his previous body of work. Looking back, Boogie laughs: “Bobby Shmurdaput out a hit song, so I guess if they want to put it like that I’ll take it. But no, I’m a way different artist!” He put the song out knowing that it was a necessary gear shift. “I knew it was going to shake shit up for me. I wanted to show people that I can turn up too, I’m not just the chill dude. I wanted to tell a different side of my story. I knew people were going to judge me just off that song, but I don’t really care, because I’m just going to keep making better shit.”
