At the end of last year, Lion Babe were given some sage advice. “You guys you gotta do you, you gotta stay doing exactly what you’re doing.” You’d be forgiven for guessing incorrectly that the source of the advice was some Williamsburg producer or record label exec, but it actually came from none other than Rick Ross, who called personally as a fan of their track ‘Treat Me Like Fire’. From the moment the gentle crackle of static opened up their debut SoundCloud upload two years ago people, like the biggest Bawse, have been warming to the neo-soulish vibes of the New York duo. It’s no surprise that the song remains very precious to them. It’s the first they ever made together, before Lion Babe even existed; an experiment that proved to be a success.
“When we made the song we knew there was something special,” admits Lucas humbly. “Just for us alone, we were like ‘Oh wow, just collaborating and working on music is so much fun and it just feels so good this song, we should start a band’ it pushed us to do Lion Babe. I think it’s what sets the tone for our whole sound, our world, our music.” With the duo heading into the campaign for their forthcoming album, they decided to bring their introduction back to the forefront, releasing a new video for ‘Treat Me Like Fire’ in January. “Even with this recent push, we’re so happy now that it gets as much muscle behind it as something like ‘Jump Hi’ or any of the new singles that are going to come out because we love the song,” explains Lucas. “And definitely on the Internet, on the underground, Soundcloud vibe a bunch of people have heard it already and for them it’s a song that’s two years old, but I think there’s a lot of people who hadn’t heard it yet and we’re glad that they’re getting to hear it now also.”
