While chatting to French DJ and producer Brodinski, it becomes obvious that he isn’t the type of guy that you’re going to catch falling into a formula. He mentions “doing things differently” a lot. It might be something that he picked up when he was enlisted to contribute to Kanye West’s Yeezus album, but more likely it was already inherent in him.
It’s for this reason that he’s taken such a risk with his debut album – after establishing himself through electronic club focussed releases, he’s essentially decided to release a rap album. Sure, it’s still created in a way that the tracks can all be played out individually in his notoriously eclectic sets, but it still sets him up with an element of worry. If he set out to “do things differently” though, he’s already successful. We can’t imagine you’re going to hear anything else quite like Brava!
How are you feeling about getting ready to drop your debut album Brava?
I’m really happy. You know it’s coming out in less than a month so I’m super excited and at the same time really worried, of course. I’m really happy I finally got to finish it and it’s coming out. It’s great to finally see a product at the end.
What is it that worries you about it?
Because I didn’t pick up the cards I had in my hand. I chose to take some other ones, go somewhere else and do something different. I’m just worried in general because I know my life is going to change. I’m going to be more in the studio and doing things differently.
What made you choose to take that risk and go in a different direction than people might have expected?
Personally it’s been a while since I took this different direction, and since like 4 or 5 years ago I started playing rap in my sets more and more, listening to more rap, getting to know the culture more. I’ve been travelling to L.A., New York, Atlanta and Miami, going to rap parties, seeing the way the parties are different and I realised that I could find a way to reignite what I love in rap music and [apply that to what I do.]
